Equality, Diversity & Reducing Health Inequality
Jenni Douglas-Todd (Director of Equality & Inclusion for NHS England & Improvement), RCPCH &US Team and Luke Bramhall (Poverty Proofing Charity)
Evidence shows us the experiences of staff can vary depending on their age, gender and ethnicity and significant cultural challenges remain in ensuring fair treatment in the workplace. Sadly data consistently shows that poverty and inequality impact a child’s whole life, affecting their education, housing and social environment and in turn their health outcomes.
We are delighted to be joined by Jenni Douglas Todd, Director of Equality & Inclusion for NHS England & Improvement, Luke Bramhall from Children North East charity’s Poverty Proofing service and Young people from the RCPCH&Us who will share their experiences, challenge our perceptions and provide ways for us to improve inclusion and inequalities for staff and patients
Spotlight Sessions
Back by popular demand, we will again be running our spotlight sessions on the PIER Network's Trusts. In this 'Dragon's Den' style pitch presentation, learn about the new ideas, novel approaches and fantastic innovation that is happening throughout our region.

A Whole New World
Over the past 2 years, the way in which we practice has changed dramatically as healthcare moves online. We are now all familiar with Zoom, Teams, Screen Sharing, Virtual MDTs and other new technologies which have made their way into our everyday working lives.
In this session, we will explore other ways in which healthcare is moving into the digital world and how it can improve, change and sometimes challenge how we care for our patients.
The Price of Cheese: Has 'Safety' Had It's Day?
Neil Spenceley
Director of PICU and Anaesthesia at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow
In this pleanery session, Neil Spenceley closes PIER2021 by discussing the well known 'Swiss Cheese' model of mistakes and errors in healthcare and how this was in fact designed to help us learn from success. Neil will show us how rethinking how we deal with 'failure' can help us all to deliver better care is all aspects of our work
Understanding Eating Disorders
Anna Kyle, Sarah Williams and MDT Friends
Eating disorders are experiencing their own epidemic and are putting a lot of strain on CAMHS and general paediatric services throughout the region. Every member of the MDT is involved in managing young people with these problems, which is not always easy. In this session we will explore the approach to managing children with eating disorders, what to be aware of when caring for these patients in hospital and what we can do to support each other through this process.
